Anti-Social Networking

It’s becoming more and more difficult to be anti-social these days.

I remember a time when you could spend hours cut off from the world. When you could decide to have a quiet evening just listening to CD’s or watching TV with your immediate family. A time when you weren’t chastized by your friends for not updating your damn Facebook Status every time you have a random thought.

What has happened to us?

The mobile phone has a lot to answer for. A device that was created to aid communication has become the cause of the most ignorant behaviour I’ve ever witnessed. People outright ignoring the people around them as they Tweet and IM and Text and Email … and I thought it was bad enough when your conversations were being occasionally interrupted by a good old fashioned phone call! How wrong I was.

Since the advent of Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and many, many other “Social Networking” sites, it seems that the general public have become more and more needy, clingy and desperate for attention. So many have taken these sites as carte blanche to bombard us with the everyday nonsense that fills their lives. Do they truly believe that they will be considered relevant among their peers if they let them know whenever they can’t sleep … or when they’re off to the supermarket for a loaf of bread …?

I think there needs to be some sort of epiphany here where everyone using these sites finally realizes the difference between an interesting comment and utter shit.

It’s incredibly ironic that some of these useless “micro-bloggers” have criticized Stephen Fry for being “boring”. He is probably the most interesting Tweeter out there!

These Twitter and Facebook spammers need to stop and think before hitting “Submit” every time they’re about to post something. They need to think “Will anybody be the slightest bit interested in what I’m about to say?” I guarantee that probably 95% of the time, the answer will be “No”.

These sites were created for sharing information and opinion. Not for spouting about the utter detritus that 99% of their users force upon their “friends” on a minute-to-minute basis.

And worse than all of that, those of us that wish to stay clear of these sites are viewed as the outcasts! Well, here’s an eye-opener for you: It’s not that we dislike Facebook, MSN, Skype, Twitter or any of these services. We dislike you and your inability to SHUT THE FUCK UP when you have nothing to say.

It’s enough to make you wish the text message was never invented.
